Astoria is a residential and commercial neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens, bordered by the East River.
Today, much of the Astoria waterfront is being redeveloped and underutilized industrial sites in forgotten historic neighborhoods are being revived. Hallets Point is one of five former industrial sites on the waterfront being transformed and will bring seven new mixed-use residential towers, including 2,000 market-rate units and 500 affordable units, into the neighborhood. The development will also include new waterfront parks, a supermarket, retail shops and restaurants, and two new schools. These waterfront projects were designed by a New York architectural firm, in conjunction with private developers, city agencies, and landscape architects.
Laid-back Astoria is a multicultural neighborhood of low-rise residences and small businesses, in Queens. Known for its Greek tavernas and cafes, the area is home to a variety of traditional ethnic eateries and trendy spots. The Museum of the Moving Image, with its exhibits about film, television and digital media, is a top draw. The open-air Bohemian Beer Garden and Astoria Park hum with activity in warm weather.
Astoria is roughly a 20-minute subway ride from Midtown Manhattan. MTA subway lines R, N, W, & V and a number of bus lines provide convenient public transportation to New York City. By car, you can access the Queensborough Bridge, Grand Central Parkway, and the Robert F Kennedy Bridge to get to Manhattan.
